The Sound of Thunder

'As for the men whom Moses sent to spy out the land and who returned and made all the congregation grumble against him by bringing out a bad report concerning the land, even those men who brought out the very bad report of the land died by a plague before the Lord. But Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephunneh remained alive out of those men who went to spy out the land.' Numbers 14:36-38 (NASB)

To grumble is to make a low rumbling noise similar to the sound of thunder. Take one then times it by 2.4 million. Jet engine decibel level volume I am sure. Isn't it the complaining, the moaning, the constant whining and muttering that wears us down and brings on our diseases? It is like instant gratification for the one who does it, but drops a wet blanket on the progress to the one that receives it. Grumbling. It acts like a wave of perpetual motion of sound; an onomatopoeia word, the drip, drip, drip, that builds up to a wall that impedes progress, a crescendo so loud and overwhelming that it is deafening and can be felt physically! Is it useful? Only for destruction. That is what Moses had to tolerate. That is what God had to put a stop to. That is what lead to the plague.

Why would God intervene in the situation during the Exodus? To save His people! What had He accomplished? One thing so great on the principle of it that it almost seems unbelievable. Did he stop with the rescue of a generation of slaves? No, He absolutely did not stop there. He took them out of their captivity and protected them and made sure they had something to eat and to wear! He provided everything for them, and not just in the simple, but to the miraculous supernatural tenth degree. He supplied the water they needed to drink from rocks. He supplied the manna they needed for food from heaven, He guided and protected them in a cloud by day and by fire at night. He did this for them, and so much more, yet, they couldn't stop complaining about it all and to say that they wished that He had let them die there in Egypt! Well, that was enough. He could do nothing more at that point than to grant their request.

Moses begged God to forgive them and told the people to stop complaining as he sent out the twelve spies to search out the land. Oh what an amazing gift that land was to be. It was everything that God had promised them. It was a good land, flowing with milk and honey. But...no. They would not accept that gift. It was unacceptable in their own eyes with their grasshopper mentality. They couldn't comprehend it in the natural.

The gift God wanted to give them came with a price the people still in bondage to their past could not pay. It was just on the other side of a test and that test included a few spiritual growth potential giants. Of the twelve spies ten gave a bad report about the giants that lived there and from that day on God began to slaughter them. None, no not one, would live to see their extravagant gift, except the two that gave the good report. With all that He had done for them, and all that they had seen, they still did not have the courage to see and live their potential. They would only receive that to which they could believe. The lived their lives in total bondage to their own limited knowledge as slaves to their immaturity and lack of trust. So they brought death and the plague to their congregation as the unfortunate result of their own evil rebellion to God..

Dear Father. This day forth I pledge to take responsibility for my circumstances and to push back against the tyranny of the state that refuses to acknowledge You and the spirit of disbelief and rebellion that wants to smother me. Let Your promises be like manna to me and let me give a good report and reject the bad so that You can use me and work through me that which You so desire to give and do. Amen.
