Our Confidence Is In the Lord

'Now these things happened to them as an example, and it was written down as a warning to us—on whom the ends of the ages have come. Therefore let the one who thinks that he stands watch out that he doesn’t fall. No temptation has taken hold of you except what is common to mankind. But God is faithful—He will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you can handle. But with the temptation He will also provide a way of escape, so you will be able to endure it.' 1 Corinthians 10:11-13 (TLV)

To us this day, a Good Word, a word of caution and a word of comfort is given. It is like manna from heaven for the weak. Always refreshing and never disappointing.

What purpose is this word which we have been given? To many in the time of need, it is to be used as a book of examples, to teach us stories and to tell us what has happened to those that have gone on before.

The stories in the Bible were written down as a warning to me. So that, even when I am at the end of my ego, I might be willing to read it and to heed its advice. Whenever I think that I can stand the storms and temptations of life, I would be wise to think twice and to remember those in similar circumstances that felt the same way and yet fell. Many were just as strong and knowing, or even more so, yet they failed. Knowing that the fall is possible, even for the likes of these, this should be my reminder; don't grumble, don't put much trust in myself, fear God.

Don't grumble lest you be prepared to wander. Don't trust yourself but rather fear God and He will deliver you. There are no new temptations under the sun. Even so, our God is able. He will not allow you to be tempted beyond the point that you can handle it. He always provides a way of escape. Knowing this, we should be able to bear all burdens and endure all things even to the end, if we place our trust in Him.

Dear Father. Thank you for the examples that you give. Thank you for warning us how to live.  Thank you for keeping temptation manageable and for providing a way of escape. We place all of our trust in You. In Jesus's name. Amen.
